Frequently Asked Questions

What is nutritional therapy?

Nutritional Therapy works to identify any deficiencies or imbalances that may be keeping you from achieving optimal health. By focusing on the foundations of health: digestion, blood sugar balance, fatty acids, minerals, and hydration, we get a better idea of what is not working optimally. Our goal is improve the assimilation of nutrients you consume and, therefore, enable your body to heal and function in the way it was meant to.

What’s involved in the initial health consultation and how much does it cost?

The initial health consultation is a FREE 15 minute consult in which I will take the opportunity to introduce myself and share how I practice nutritional therapy. I want to know where the client is at— How long have you been feeling this way? Where do you want to be? What are your health goals? And what is in the way of you achieving your health goals? What obstacles are keeping you from optimal health? I believe everyone is bio-individual and that the road to health is not the same for everyone, and that is why I am here to help coach you to better health. After that we make a plan to see how many sessions will be the best fit. I prefer to work for at least a few months with someone for accountability. Sustainable results do not happen overnight.

What happens after the initial consultation?

After the initial consultation, the client has the option to choose to work in a 3 or 6 month package. The 3 month package will involve six- 45 minute consults over a three month period. The 6 month package is nine- 45 minute consults over a six month period. In the follow up consults, attention will be focused on answering the questions discussed in the initial consult through observation of food journaling, a nutritional assessment questionnaire (NAQ), and of course, nutrition and food education.

+ Individual appointments also available on an hourly basis.

How long does a nutritional protocol take?

It depends. I wish I could say that I knew what it would take for every person, but the truth is that we are all bio individual and what worked for me, might not necessarily work for you. A formula that is used in my field, is that for every year of not feeling great is a month in healing… I would say that at least three months of adherence is a good start. And then once your body starts turning on, you don’t want to go back to your old habits, and you sustain your growth and your health goals.

Do you count calories?

No, there are more important things to look at then calories. I am more interested in the ingredients used, such as oils and artificial and “natural flavorings.”

What is the GAPS diet?

The GAPS diet stands for Gut and Psychology and Gut and Physiology created by Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride. Dr. McBride recognized that there was a connection between the gut and the brain and the rest of the body. Our gut is home to 80% of our immune function, and thus a healthy gut is imperative for a healthy body. It is a strict healing foods diet similar to Specific Carbohydrate Diet, but is a little bit more complex. By limiting carbohydrates and starches (sugars) the gut lining has a chance to heal and build with a diet plentiful in healthy fats and proteins. ( I healed my body with this diet and totally believe in its effectiveness.)

What are traditional foods and healing foods?

Traditional foods are healing foods. For thousands of years, real food has sustained us, but when food became a commodity our health suffered. We know a lot about traditional food from the research of Weston A. Price. He was a dentist in the 1930’s ,who alarmed by the increase of dental caries and hypothesizing that Western diet was to blame, went around the world in search of societies that were not yet touched by Western civilization. What he found astounded him, he found several cultures that were not afflicted with the dis-ease he had seen in the Western world. He looked at their traditional diets and concluded that these cultures shared many traits: raw dairy, soaked and fermented grains, pastured meat, including organ meats, wild seafood, fermented foods, and fresh vegetables and fruit. This is the food that heals, and the food we should all be eating because it is packed with essential vitamins and minerals, as well as the right macronutrients used to build our bodies.

What if I don’t live in Santa Cruz?
